Air Source heat Pumps Installations Southampton & Hampshire

An Air to Water Heat Pump is a system that is installed on the outside of your property. It collects air from the outside and transfers it to your water based central heating system.

The heat generated from the system can be used for your hot water supply, underfloor heating and your radiators.

You could apply for the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme (which ended 31st March 2022). The Clean Heat Grant (£5,000 grant, now called the Boiler Upgrade Scheme) replaced the RHI scheme in May 2022.

FAQ - Your Questions Answered

How much does it cost to install an Air Source Heat Pump in Southampton, Hampshire?

The cost to install an Air to Water Heat Pump System can be over £8,000. Our engineer will advise after a visit and carrying out a full check on the current set up. A water based underfloor system or large radiators would also be required. This will allow a large surface area for the heat to release, making it efficient and cost effective.

How efficient are Air Source Heat Pumps?

An ASHP Installation can be up to 300% efficient. For every unit of energy it uses to harness heat, it outputs 3 units of heat. A better system, in theory, would give a better output. You also have to bear in mind that your property needs to be insulated or you will lose heat. We will carry out a full heat loss survey before doing an installation.

What are the advantages of Air Source Heat Pumps?

  • Energy Efficient (less C02)
  • Qualify for Government Grant Funding
  • Save costs compared to older heating systems
  • Renewable energy
  • Doing your bit in cutting C02 emissions

What are the disadvantages of Air Source Heat Pumps?

  • You need space either side or front of property to install the outside system
  • Not 100% zero carbon as they use electricity
  • A wet heating system is needed, and property needs to be insulated or you will lose heat
  • Fan of outside unit can be a little noisy during winter, but the volume is still low

Can you get grants for heat pumps?

Yes, you can get grants for both Commercial Air Source Heat Pumps and domestic installs. You were eligible to qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme (this ended 31st March 2022). Now, you can claim the Boiler Upgrade Grant. This grant is now available (May 2022 onwards). You cannot apply for a grant yourself. A registered MCS engineer will need to do the required paperwork and submit the application. The grant is then deducted from the total price of the installation.

Do Air Source Heat Pumps qualify for RHI?

The Air to Water Heat Pump based system qualifies for the RHI scheme (the air to air system does not qualify). But this incentive scheme ended in April 2022.

What is the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme?

The RHI scheme was launched to reward property owners who had installed an air to water heating system. Recipients of the RHI scheme were financially rewarded a payment every quarter, for every khw of renewable heat their system produced. A homeowner could earn  anywhere between £6,000 to £12,000 over a 7 year period. The RHI scheme ended 31st March 2022.

What is the Clean Heat Grant?

The Clean Heat Grant (CHG) was originally going to replace the RHI scheme. It was renamed the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and became available from May 2022 onwards. The Government gives grants of £5,000 towards the cost of installing an Air to Water Heat Pump. The RHI scheme was the better option, but it’s no longer available for new installs. The Boiler Upgrade grant will cease in 2025.

Are you MCS Accredited?

Yes we are. Our Certification Number: APH-47466. MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme. Engineer must hold a MCS license number to carry out installs..

Would my current boiler be a better option?

It terms of cost effectiveness, this could be a possibility. Our engineer will advise you if it will be worthwhile for your specific property to make the switch. But you need to bear in mind that in the long run the Government is phasing out gas boilers. Also, remember that your property needs to be insulated and have the correct systems in place in order to derive full benefits from an air source heat system.
